These are different Unicode characters, not formatting. They paste anywhere, which is the appeal — but screen readers announce them as mathematical symbols or skip them entirely, and search engines do not match them against the ordinary word. Good for a display name, wrong for body text.
Intensity is capped, because past a certain density the marks stop rendering and start hanging the text engine on some platforms. The effect is built from combining marks, so it can be stripped back with the text cleaner.

How it works
Combining marks, stacked
Every mark is a real Unicode combining character — the kind used for accents. Stacking dozens on one letter makes it spill upward and downward over neighbouring lines, which is the whole effect.
Intensity is capped on purpose
Past a certain density the text stops rendering and starts hanging the layout engine, and on some platforms a sufficiently long zalgo string will freeze the app displaying it. The cap keeps the output usable.
It can be stripped back
Because the marks are separate characters, normalising the text and removing them recovers the original exactly — shown on the page so you can see it is reversible.

Practical advice
Getting a better result
- Many platforms filter or truncate heavy zalgo, and some render it as a solid block. Lower intensity travels better.
- It is genuinely disruptive for screen reader users, who hear every mark announced. Worth avoiding anywhere people have not opted in.
- The text cleaner removes combining marks, so zalgo pasted into it comes back clean.

Why is my zalgo less intense than I set it?
The intensity is capped. Past that point the marks stop rendering and start causing performance problems in whatever is displaying them, so the cap is a practical limit rather than a stylistic one.
Can zalgo text be undone?
Yes. The marks are separate characters, so normalising and stripping them recovers the original text exactly.
