Small text and small caps

Small capitals — letters drawn at roughly lowercase height in a capital shape. They paste anywhere and are among the more widely supported of these styles.

These are different Unicode characters, not formatting. They paste anywhere, which is the appeal — but screen readers announce them as mathematical symbols or skip them entirely, and search engines do not match them against the ordinary word. Good for a display name, wrong for body text.

How it works

01

These are characters, not formatting

A “bold” letter here is a distinct Unicode character that happens to look bold. That is why it survives being pasted into a bio or a username where real formatting would be stripped — and it is also why a screen reader announces it as mathematical notation or skips it, and why search engines do not match it against the ordinary word. Fine for a display name; wrong for anything that has to be read aloud or found.

02

Small caps have no tidy block

Unlike the mathematical alphabets, small capitals were added one at a time as phonetic notation, so there is no arithmetic that produces them — each letter is a separate mapping. Two of them, q and x, have no small-cap form at all and are left as they are.

What it does

Well supported

These characters exist in most fonts, so they are less likely to show as boxes than the mathematical styles.

Runs in your browser

No account and no upload — what you type is never sent anywhere. Analytics records that the tool was opened, never what you put into it.

Practical advice

Getting a better result

  • q and x have no small-capital form in Unicode, so they appear at normal size. It is a gap in the standard, not in this tool.
  • For real small caps in a document, use the font-variant CSS property or your word processor — those are typography rather than character substitution and stay searchable.

Questions

Things people ask

Why are some letters full size?

Because Unicode has no small-capital character for them. Q and X are the notable gaps, so they pass through unchanged rather than being dropped.
