How it works
A sentence ends at its terminator
Full stop, question mark or exclamation mark, with a run of them counting once so “Really?!” is one sentence and not two. It is a simple rule, applied consistently.
Which means abbreviations over-count
“Dr. Who” counts as two sentences here, and so does “approx. 40 items”. Fixing that properly needs a dictionary of abbreviations and still guesses at the edges. A rule you can predict and correct for is more useful than a clever one that is wrong in ways you cannot anticipate — so this tool tells you what it does rather than pretending the problem does not exist.
Average length is the useful number
Readability formulas are mostly sentence length in a hat. Under 20 words a sentence reads as plain English; over 25 and most readers start re-reading. Watching that average while you edit is a faster feedback loop than scoring the whole piece afterwards.

Practical advice
Getting a better result
- If the count looks high, check for abbreviations and decimal numbers — each full stop starts a new sentence as far as the counter is concerned.
- Aim for a mix rather than a target. Prose where every sentence is the same length reads as flat even when the average is ideal.
- For a proper score rather than a count, the readability checker turns the same numbers into Flesch Reading Ease and a grade level.

How does it decide where a sentence ends?
At a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark. Consecutive terminators count once, so “Wait!!!” is a single sentence. Line breaks alone do not end a sentence, because a wrapped line in a pasted document is not a new one.
Why does “Dr. Smith” count as two sentences?
Because the full stop after “Dr” is indistinguishable from a sentence ending without a dictionary of abbreviations. It is a known limitation of counting this way, and it is called out rather than hidden — if your text is full of abbreviations, expect the count to run high.
What is a good average sentence length?
For general web writing, somewhere between 15 and 20 words reads comfortably. Technical and legal writing runs longer by necessity. What matters more than the average is variation — a run of sentences all the same length reads as monotonous however short they are.
