How it works
A quarter turn swaps the dimensions
A 4000×3000 photo turned 90° is 3000×4000, and the canvas is rebuilt at that size before anything is drawn. Rotating onto a canvas of the original size is the classic bug: the ends of the picture are simply gone, and it looks as though the tool ate them.
An angled turn needs a bigger canvas still
Rotate by 7° and the corners of the picture now stick out past every edge of the original rectangle. The canvas is sized to the rotated bounding box, so the whole image survives — at the cost of four triangular gaps, which are transparent in PNG and WebP or filled with a colour you choose.
Mirroring happens in the same pass
Rotating and flipping are one canvas operation here rather than two. Doing them separately would mean encoding the image in between, and for JPG or WebP that intermediate encode throws away quality for nothing.

A choice about the corners
Leave them transparent, or fill them with a colour. Transparent is right when the image will sit on a coloured background; a fill is right when it will not.
The picture never leaves your computer
Everything here is drawn on a canvas in your own browser. There is no upload and no account, and the picture itself is never sent anywhere — which for a photograph of your family, your passport or your unreleased product is the only arrangement worth having. Analytics records that the tool was opened, never what you opened it on.
Practical advice
Getting a better result
- If a photo looks sideways on your computer but upright on your phone, the file is probably relying on an EXIF orientation flag that some viewers honour and others ignore. Rotating it here bakes the correct orientation into the pixels, which fixes it everywhere.
- Straighten by finding a line in the picture that ought to be level — a horizon, a windowsill, a door frame — and matching the slider to it rather than judging the whole image at once.
- After an angled rotation, crop the result to lose the corner triangles. A slight zoom-in is almost always less noticeable than four wedges of background colour.
- Quarter turns change no pixel values at all, so save as PNG and the result is bit-for-bit the same picture in a new arrangement.
- Mirroring text makes it unreadable and mirroring a face makes it subtly wrong to anyone who knows it. Both are more visible than you expect.

Things people ask
Does rotating lose quality?
A quarter turn does not — the pixels are rearranged, not recalculated. An angled rotation does, slightly, because pixels that no longer sit on the grid have to be blended from their neighbours. Saving as PNG avoids adding any further loss on top.
Why did the image get bigger after I rotated it a few degrees?
Because a rotated rectangle needs a larger rectangle to contain it. The alternative is cutting the corners off, which is worse. Crop afterwards if you want the original proportions back.
Can I rotate by an exact number of degrees?
The slider moves in half-degree steps, which is finer than the eye can judge on a horizon. Combine it with the quarter-turn buttons for anything larger — 90° plus 3° is 93°.
What happens to the corners in a JPG?
JPG has no transparency, so they are filled white regardless of what the colour picker says. Save as PNG or WebP if you need them transparent, or choose a fill colour that matches wherever the image is going.
