How it works
You see the whole picture, not the crop
The preview shows the full image with the box drawn on top, because you cannot choose where to cut by looking only at what survives the cut. What falls outside is dimmed rather than hidden, so the thing you are excluding is still visible while you decide to exclude it.
Dragging costs nothing
The box is drawn over the image in the browser rather than by re-rendering the picture, so it follows your finger at whatever rate the screen refreshes. The image itself is only re-drawn once, when you download.
Ratios stay locked while you drag
Choose 1:1 or 16:9 and every handle keeps that shape, anchored to the corner opposite the one you are holding. Without the anchoring the box appears to slide away from the corner you are pulling, which is the single most irritating bug a cropper can have.

Presets for the shapes people actually need
Square for a profile picture, 16:9 for a video thumbnail or a hero, 4:3 and 3:2 for print, and the two portrait ratios for phone screens. Free-form when none of them is right.
Rule-of-thirds guides
The same grid every camera draws in the viewfinder. Putting a horizon or a face on one of those lines rather than dead centre is the oldest and most reliable framing advice there is.
Numbers as well as handles
Left, top, width and height are editable fields. Dragging is faster for choosing; typing is the only way to be exact, and both drive the same box.
The picture never leaves your computer
Everything here is drawn on a canvas in your own browser. There is no upload and no account, and the picture itself is never sent anywhere — which for a photograph of your family, your passport or your unreleased product is the only arrangement worth having. Analytics records that the tool was opened, never what you opened it on.
Practical advice
Getting a better result
- Crop before you resize. Cropping removes pixels, so resizing first means you carefully scaled some pixels you were about to throw away.
- For a profile picture, lock 1:1 and leave some space above the head — most sites round the corners off into a circle, which eats the edges.
- A 16:9 crop is what YouTube, most site heroes and every widescreen display expect. It is the safest choice when you do not know where the image will end up.
- If the horizon is crooked, straighten it in the rotator first and then crop — rotating afterwards would put the angled edges back inside your careful frame.
- The percentage under the box tells you how much of the original you are keeping. Below about 25% you are effectively zooming, and the result will look softer wherever it is displayed large.

Things people ask
Does cropping reduce quality?
The pixels you keep are copied unchanged, so no. The file will be smaller simply because it contains fewer pixels. Saving as JPG re-encodes and loses a little; saving as PNG does not.
Can I crop to an exact pixel size?
Yes — type the width and height into the fields under the picture. The box on the image updates to match, so you can then drag it to position without changing its size.
What aspect ratio should a profile picture be?
Square. Every major platform crops to a square and then usually masks it into a circle, so anything in the corners is at risk. Centre the face and leave a margin.
Can I undo a crop?
Nothing is written until you press download, so before then just drag the box again or press "Whole image" to start over. After downloading, the original file on your computer is still untouched — this tool never modifies it.
