How it works
A favicon is not one file any more
A browser tab wants 16 and 32 pixels. An iOS home screen wants 180. Android wants 192 for the icon and 512 for the splash screen. Windows shortcuts still ask for 48. Each is rendered separately from your original rather than scaled from a middle size, so the small ones stay crisp.
Every size says what asks for it
Each icon is labelled with the thing that requests it. A generator that hands over fourteen files without explanation leaves you guessing which ones matter and which are legacy, and the usual outcome is that all fourteen get shipped forever.
The ICO is a real ICO
ICO is a container format with its own 22-byte header, and browsers accept PNG data inside it. Renaming a PNG to .ico works by accident in most browsers and fails in enough places to matter, so the header is written properly here.

The markup comes with it
The link tags are shown on the page to copy, and included in the ZIP as a file. Knowing which tags to write is the part people actually get wrong, so the files alone would only be half an answer.
Contained, never cropped
A logo that is not square is padded rather than cut. A favicon is usually the one place a mark has to stay whole, and cropping it would quietly remove part of the thing it identifies.
An optional background
A transparent icon vanishes against a dark browser theme. A solid colour behind it fixes that, at the cost of a visible square — your call, previewed either way.
Practical advice
Getting a better result
- Start from a square source at 512px or larger, or an SVG. Anything smaller means the 512px icon is an enlargement, and it will look soft on an Android splash screen.
- Simplify the mark for small sizes. At 16 pixels a detailed logo becomes a smudge; most good favicons are a single letter, a shape, or a monogram.
- Put favicon.ico at the root of your domain. Browsers still request /favicon.ico directly when no link tag matches, and a 404 there is a wasted round trip on every page.
- Test the 16px version at actual size, not zoomed in. It is the one visitors see most and the one most likely to be unreadable.
- If your site has a dark and a light theme, check the icon against both. A black logo on transparent disappears entirely in dark mode.

What size should a favicon be?
There is no single size any more. 16 and 32 cover browser tabs, 180 covers iOS, 192 and 512 cover Android, and 48 covers Windows shortcuts. This tool produces all of them from one source so you do not have to choose.
Do I still need favicon.ico?
It is worth having. Browsers request /favicon.ico from the root when nothing else matches, and some feed readers and link previewers look only for that file. It costs a few kilobytes to satisfy them.
Where do the files go?
All of them at the root of your site, alongside index.html, and the markup pasted into the head of every page. If you put them in a subfolder, change the paths in the link tags to match.
Why is my favicon not updating?
Browsers cache favicons harder than almost anything else, sometimes ignoring a normal refresh entirely. Try a private window first to confirm the new one is live, then clear the site data if you need to see it in your usual profile.
Can I use an SVG?
Yes, as the source — it is the ideal input, since every size is then rendered from the vector rather than from a bitmap. The output files are PNG and ICO, which is what the widest range of browsers and platforms will accept.
