Why convert BMP to JPG?

BMP stores pixels with no compression at all, so files from older Windows software are enormous relative to what they contain. Converting to JPG usually reduces them by an order of magnitude.

Does converting BMP to JPG lose quality?

JPG is a lossy format, so some data is discarded during encoding. The quality slider controls how much, and the default of 88 is chosen to be visually hard to tell apart from the source at normal viewing sizes.

Because BMP is lossless, the source file itself has not lost anything, so this is a single compression pass.

Are my BMP files uploaded anywhere?
