Generate breadcrumb schema for the trail to a page

List the steps from your home page down to the page itself. The markup replaces the raw URL under a search result with the trail, which is one of the few pieces of structured data that still visibly changes how a listing looks.

The last step is the page itself, and Google's guidance is to leave its URL off — a link to the page you are already on is not a step in the trail.

Worth knowing

  • A trail of one step says nothing. Breadcrumbs are worth marking up from two levels down.
  • The trail should match the breadcrumbs shown on the page, in the same order. Google compares them.

How it works

01

The last step is the page itself

Google’s guidance is to leave the URL off the final entry, because a link to the page you are already on is not a step in the trail. Most generators emit one anyway. This one drops it, and the field is marked optional in the form so it is clear that is deliberate.

02

Positions are numbered for you

Each entry carries its place in the list, starting at one. Getting those out of order is the other common way a breadcrumb block quietly fails.

03

It should match what is on the page

Google compares the markup against the breadcrumbs a visitor can see, in the same order. Markup that describes a trail the page does not show is the kind of mismatch that gets ignored at best.

What it does

As many levels as you need

Three to start with, since that is the usual depth, and a button for more.

Absolute URLs enforced

A relative path in structured data has no page to be relative to. Every URL but the last is checked.

A single step is questioned

A trail of one says nothing. The tool says so rather than producing markup that does nothing.

Runs in your browser

No account and no upload — what you type is never sent anywhere. Analytics records that the tool was opened, never what you put into it.

Practical advice

Getting a better result

  • Breadcrumbs are worth marking up from two levels down. On a top-level page there is no trail to describe.
  • Use the names a visitor sees, not your URL slugs. "Winter coats" rather than "winter-coats".
  • One BreadcrumbList per page. If a page genuinely sits in two places, pick the canonical one.
  • This is one of the few structured-data types that still reliably changes how a result looks, which makes it a better use of an hour than most.
  • Add visible breadcrumbs to the page as well if it does not have them. The markup describes navigation; it is not a substitute for it.

Questions

Things people ask

Do breadcrumbs help SEO?

They replace the raw URL in a search result with a readable trail, which helps people decide whether to click. They also make your site structure explicit to a crawler. Both are real, modest benefits.

Should the last item have a URL?

No. Google recommends leaving it off, since it points at the page the visitor is already on. This tool omits it automatically.

Do I need visible breadcrumbs too?

Google compares the markup with the page. Matching visible breadcrumbs is the safe arrangement, and they are useful to visitors regardless.

What if a page belongs in two places?

The specification allows several BreadcrumbLists, but in practice pick the one that matches your canonical URL. Two competing trails is a question you are asking a crawler to answer for you.
